Proverbs 22:7: The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is a slave to the lender. It is what I've built my business around. People don't understand/appreciate the dangers of debt. Matthew 7:12: Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you: do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. ... shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets. While I won’t be the only person to choose Matthew 7:12, it had a significant impact on me from the first time I heard it as a child in the school chapel, all the way through my life to today. Matthew 6:26: Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? The reason is these words spoken by Jesus himself we are revealing a comforting truth about our heavenly Father’s care for us. This verse communicates the message that God looks after every life and everything here in His creation. We see that even though creatures like birds do not, sow, or reap, or gather food, that they are still provided for by God. Then we are presented with the rhetorical question that asks “Are ye not much better than they” which lets us know that we are worth more to God than these creatures, and assures us that if God looks after and cares for every bird that flies through the air, we can expect and look forward to evening more! This chapter as a whole is a call to have faith in God, and the promise that we can trust in Him for what we need. An example would be how He provided manna and quail for the Israelites throughout their journey in the wilderness despite their complaining and disobedience He loved them enough to keep them provided for. This verse is one of my favorites because it is applicable to people throughout the ages and even today. John 21:18: Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. In the early days of my home care company, I happened to be reading John 21 when I came across this verse. I realized that the verse perfectly encapsulates what caregivers do. Caregiving is a fact of life as Jesus expressly taught here. Romans 14:10: Why do you pass judgement on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God. This excerpt is particularly resonant for me. At a time of deep social and political polarity, and widening cultural cleavages, it is a reminder to treat all with respect. That we are - none of us - more worthy or valued than any other, and that we should aspire to act with kindness and openness. Hebrews 11:36-40: Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated--the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect. Although this verse may not sound as cheerful as others, it's one of my favorite versus because it reminds me that in this world we will face persecution. It's also a reminder that when times get tough, there are others who have faced far more difficult situations than I have. Finally, at the end of the verse is a promise that things will get better -- much better. Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. 9 years ago I developed flesh-eating bacteria which put me in a coma for 3 weeks and the hospital for 3 months as I recovered from the amputation of both hands and both feet. The recovery was long and hard.Those scriptures gave me the courage and strength to heal and to learn how to live as a quad amputee. My faith has grown tremendously through my healing. Galatians 3:18: And may you know how the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high and how deep his love is I stand in awe of this Bible verse everytime I read it. John 14: 2-4: In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.[3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.[4] And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. My aunt Doris, who recently passed away, was a preacher's wife and ran a Vacation Bible School for the summer when I was young. One of the assignments was to learn a bible verse, verbatim. The verse above was given to me. I thank her for that and to this day, other than Psalm 23 or John 3:16. She probably never knew. I always knew the verse simply meant that as a believer, I would have everlasting life and live with God and Jesus in Heaven after death.Since losing my paternal grandmother, mother and then father within a year, the verse means so much more to me now.For all three, the verse was read at their funerals. I did this intentionally, as this verse provides hope. For faithful believers, Jesus made this promise to us. But, for me, this message has recently changed and become one for the grievers, such as myself. That we will one day be reunited with our loved ones, but it's also a symbol of Jesus' undying love for us. And his commitment to return to usher us through the gates of eternity... his father's house. What an act of love! That gives me peace to rest on until my final days. Proverbs 27:17: Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens the wits of another. Recently I founded a small business, and I am constantly reminding myself of the importance of collaborating with others to improve my business as well as myself. It has been my experience that when I try to do something alone, I can only reach a certain level. Sometimes its hard to recruit the help of others, or to be vulnerable in sharing my struggles, but it has been my experience that when I surround myself with people who are similarly driven, and I take that risk, the collaborative learning and the connection that happens between all of us is powerful. But none of those were the right answer. The youth pastor piped up and said nope, it's to not fear or worry. God's word contains over 360 references for his children to not fear or have worry. That was a pivotal moment in my walk of faith. Ever since that moment, anything and everything I would have worried about in the past, I think about Isaiah 41:10 and give it to God. With genuine faith and trust in Him, it has really been that easy. Isaiah 40:31: But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings, like eagles. They shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Psychologists are not immune to burn out. We too get weary, faint hearted, and discouraged. While seeing patient after patient, we try to maintain a professional boundary that prevents the patients’ problems from becoming our own, but, essentially, we take on their burdens and their problems. I also have a personal life, and, with it comes, personal problems. Now I have it much better than so many others, and have plenty to be thankful for. But still, I have those days when my own baggage from the past, intersects with today’s stressors, and I find myself feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. At such moments, this verse that I mentioned, gives me strength to keep moving forward. I wait upon the Lord, and, according to his faithfulness, he provides for my needs in bountiful ways. Peter 5:6-7: Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7casting all of your anxiety on him because he cares for you. When I was attending university, I went to a Chrisitan school and I took a course on Biblical discipleship and personal Bible study. It was in this class that I learned different ways on how to truly study God's word and then apply it to my life. Our instructor had us memorize some verses from 1 Peter and these were some of the ones I picked. I chose them because I was always worrying about different things in my life. I would worry about an upcoming exam, project, getting schoolwork done, how I was doing at track practice, if I would be good enough at a track meet, what I should wear, what others thought of me, if I was eating healthy enough, if I was properly balancing school, work, track, and friendships... etc. the list goes on! I had so many worries and tried to perfect everything. These verses helped me realize that I don't get anything out of stressing and worrying. It was a great reminder to me that God cares about ME. He has my back and I can come to Him with any of my fears, worries, or concerns. Philippians 4:11: For I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. This is my favorite because the apostle Paul wrote this while he was in prison and yet, he was content. Mathew 6:19-20: Do not store up for yourselves treasures on Earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. As a result of the current pandemic situation, it is evident how much people have turned to hoard. Gathering bulks of everyday goods, making treasures in this world where everything can perish overtime is of no use. In this materialistic world, there will always be a force that can take your belongings away from you. If only we could realize that the life in Heaven is free from all the flaws and our treasures, which are our good deeds, will benefit us in our afterlife, then the way we spend our life would be easier and more comforting. Corinthians 12:12-14: 12 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For we were all baptized by[a] one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. 14 Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. It is about unity and team work. My youngest brother Mark was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer during this health crisis. He needs all the unity and teamwork from family and friends and others to help him in his fight to stay alive. And I will continue to need that teamwork too as I work to overcome PTSD each day and reach a symbolic goal on my journey of recovery. Tens of thousands of amazing strangers have come together one by one and become a team that's helped me in this recovery from a trauma over the last five years. And they are still helping me as I move forward to that symbolic goal involving hope and laughter. But all of us can use teamwork and unity during this pandemic. We are strongest together. No matter where we live. No matter who we are. No matter what happens. We are all a team. That Bible verse 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 expresses that spirit of togetherness and teamwork. Ephesians 3:10: His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms. The Bible rarely (if ever) answers a "Why?" question, much less opens up the heavens as much as this one. Romans 8:28: And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Pain’s emotional barrier to faith can be formidable. When I see God, items on my long list of questions for him will include a heartbreaking and unwanted divorce, betrayal by trusted coworkers, my second wife’s cancer death, and all sorts of disappointing human behavior and natural disasters. Revelation 3:20: Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. Jesus is all about relationships. Isaiah 26:3: You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. This is my favorite Bible verse because it reminds me how to get back to a place of peace when life gets hard. I wish life didn't get hard, but it's good to be reminded that God is our source of peace. Philippians 4:8: Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. These days everyone is after a headline and as a general rule, bad news spreads the fastest. Our news media is filled with violence, hate and social breakdowns to the point where we despair and ask "is there anyone or anything sane in the world anymore?" Everyday I speak with people who are feeling increasingly isolated because their personal life does not reflect the darkness that they are shown through their TV. They say things like "I think I'm just going to live in a bubble" or "We just have to hope that it's not going to happen up here". It is at these times that Philippians 4:8 reminds us that despite the darkness God has instilled in each of us the light of the knowledge of what is good and right, what is kind and peaceable, what is both joyful and comforting. Phil 4:13: I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me This was the first scripture I memorized. I was 21 years old, a non-believer, a drug addict and sitting in prison on a 10 year robbery charge. I had sat in Tacoma county jail for about 8 months before I ended up in prison and there was a guy in my 16 man tank that kept trying to get me to read the Bible. I told him that I didn't read fiction. He then told me just to read the book of revelation, I told him to leave me alone. Months or maybe years after I was transferred to prison I decided to read the book of Revelation. Isaiah 49:14-16: 14 Zion said, “The Lord has forsaken me, the Lord has forgotten me.” 15 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? As Christians, our hearts may feel at times that God has grown silent and that he has no concern for us. I grew up with an abusive mother who left me and my sister and every mother figure in my life thereafter was either abusive, absent, or was taken from this world too soon. It was not until my late 20s that I finally had a wonderful mother -- my dad remarried a wonderful woman and it was finally my time (or so I thought) unfortunately, it was a dream deferred, as after only two years she grew very sick and died. Baring my teeth, I cried out to God "Do I not deserve a mother?!" Overwhelmed with grief, entrenched in my own bitterness, and confounded by death I turned on Him. I was so angry with God; I viewed him through the lens of a negligent parent and, I, the neglected son, took His silence as contempt against me. But then one day He broke His silence. While in His Word I found this love letter nested between the pages, waiting for me to discover it. I was Zion -- He became a begotten Son, betrayed and broken by the very world He came to save. He could have simply stopped at 'Can a mother forget?' as some rhetorical question awaiting the "obvious" response of "Of course, not!" But he knew better, because engraved on His palms was the memory of me and the reality that my mother had forgotten. Not Him though! He left the throne, comfort, and perfection of Heaven because He had not forgotten and never will. This is a love letter from a Father to a forgotten son, an adoption letter, a husband's devotion to His bride. John 1 KJV: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The reason is that it describes God as something impossible to know. We have the tradition of humanizing God, of giving him a human appearance, more specifically that of a man. God is all-powerful and can take any form he wants. Why human? Why masculine? Perhaps he could have created other worlds with intelligent beings like us? It is to be supposed that as almighty he will adopt the form most suitable to whoever wishes to present himself. Genesis 50:20: You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. Growing up my mom raised 2 teens on $500 a month alone after we became ill with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. We were completely abandoned by our church and our family because of things my dad had done. At the time it was really hard to get through and honestly you couldn't see a way out of the poverty and sickness. 30 years later we have a business which has turned into a ministry and we are able to tell thousands of people about Jesus all because of that time in our life. Thessalonians 5:21: but test everything; hold fast what is good I usually try to look at the Bible in its larger context — the full story, the complete book, the larger community and context of its time. I find that's more helpful and more faithful. It takes the Bible seriously. But I come from a tradition that emphasized "memory verses" and discovering this verse was crucial in my formation as a Christian. It was a reminder that our questions and doubts are good and holy. That God can handle it. That our faith is stronger for the questions. The church that I grew up in taught us that they had all the answers — they knew what God really wanted. There was no room for questions. Finding this verse was like hearing God whisper directly into my ear. When I made space for my questions, when I honored them, I was able to chase after (and sometimes wrestle with, like Jacob in Genesis 32) God. Psalm 63:8: My soul follows hard after Thee. Thy right hand upholds me. It shows me how King David had such a heart of devotion for the Lord and was described by God as a "man after His own heart”. David made it his focus to follow hard after God more than anything else in his life - more than being a king or enjoying a kingdom or fighting battles. Isaiah 53:5 (KJV): But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. This describes ALL that Jesus' death accomplished for us. He paid for our sins, yes, but he also paid for our healing, and for our peace. The Hebrew word used for healing there is rapha, and everywhere else it is used, it refers to physical healing. The Hebrew word used there for peace is shalowm, and it means not just emotional peace, but also completeness, soundness, safety, physical health, prosperity, contentment, and friendship with God. Proverbs 22:7: In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus. This is a simple verse that summarizes everything in the New Testament except that a person must first believe, confess, and then follow Jesus. If we all would begin to have the attitude/mindset of Jesus, our world would be in an entirely different environment than we currently have. This mindset would change all relationships - work, neighborhoods, family. Psalm 86:11: Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name. I love this verse because it is a progression that marks the way of following Jesus. God teaches us to trust Him, and as we do we learn what it means to rely on His faithfulness. That leads to a desire for an undivided heart, a heart surrendered only to Jesus Christ. The result will be a daily desire to come to Him in awe and reverence. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. I love this verse because it reminds me that God’s grace is everything I need. I don’t have to have it all together. I don’t have to be perfect. In fact, God encourages the opposite! When I decide to delight in my suffering, God’s strength is made perfect. Galatians 5:6: For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love. Are we saved by faith alone? If the faith is alone in Christ and in no one else, God only through Him, then the answer is YES! However, we are not saved by a faith that is unproductive that does not result in good works. Yet still, we are not saved by adding our own works to faith. We are saved by faith in the love of God which love is His Son who laid down His life as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
